An enormous amount of help is given to the Museum by people who are volunteers. From keeping the Museum store running to giving guided tours, volunteers undertake an astonishing range of tasks. Volunteers range from school students and graduates gaining work experience to retired individuals who bring a lifetime of skills with them. MOAS is looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to support the Museum’s services and community activities.

There are many opportunities for people with a special skill or interest as well as those with experience of working with the public. All kinds of people volunteer for the Museum and find it a very rewarding experience, some having worked with the Museum for over thirty years. After 25 hours of service, volunteers are awarded a one-year membership to MOAS.

Volunteers who are under the age of 18 can only be accepted as volunteers for our Summer Learning Institute program.

Docent Program

Do you love the Museum of Arts & Sciences? Do you enjoy sharing your love of art, science, and history with others? We are looking for volunteer docents to become part of our NEW docent program! Please join us in the Root Family Auditorium for one of our information sessions to learn about our new program and what being a docent is all about. Attendance at an information session is highly encouraged. 

Docent Qualifications

• Open to continued learning
• Dedicated, Passionate, Serving
• Public Speaker
• Team Player

Docent Requirements

• Ability to stand for at least one hour, with the possibility of more time regularly. 
• Ability to walk the distance between various galleries all around the Museum (both MOAS and BMOA respectively).
• Preferred flexibility of schedule and tour styles for various groups
• Basic tech skills (i.e., email use, web search for scholarly information, phone use). Most current email is REQUIRED for all docents.
• Adhering to standards, policies, and procedures as prescribed by Museum staff.
• Ability to pass a background check.

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

GUEST RELATIONS ASSISTANT
With knowledge of Museum policies and procedures, volunteer staff welcome and orient visitors to the Museum on special days such as Free Tuesday, History Con, Space Day, and more. Skills needed include good communication skills and a desire to work with the public.

MUSEUM STORE
Volunteer sales assistants handle all sales transactions, restock inventory, and do daily light housekeeping to maintain the appearance of the Museum Store. Skills needed are the ability to work with a point-of-sale system (training provided), good communication skills, and a desire to work with the public. 

EVENTS
Assist with Museum events, after-hours programs, and outreaches including guest check-in, food and beverage services, and clean up. Skills needed include good communication skills, a desire to work with the public, the ability to lift 20 pounds comfortably, and a willingness to travel to off-site locations.

DOCENT 
The Docent Program trains museum guides to conduct adult and school tours throughout the Museum. On-site training and at home study sessions are required. Skills needed include public speaking, the ability to retain information, and the self-motivation to learn and research education topics. 

SUMMER LEARNING INSTITUTE (Must be at least 14 years old to volunteer)
This is a temporary volunteer position that assists the Education Department and SLI Teachers with supervising children between the ages of 4-13. Must be willing to work with children.
